Frequently Asked Questions for Greenbug

Greenbug controls pests

What’s your return policy?

At Greenbug, we are confident that our products will control the pests you have when the pest has been properly identified and the Greenbug products are used as directed.  If you are not satisfied with your Greenbug products, please return the unused portion to us for a full refund of the product price.  We do not pay for return shipping.

The only exception to this is for the treatment of mites because:

A) It is difficult to determine an accurate diagnosis of Mites being the pest and

B) Other situations mimic the issues with Mites that Greenbug has no power to control.

To return any unused product, send to:

Greenbug, Inc.

747 Robert Smalls Parkway

Beaufort, SC  29906

We will be happy to offer credit to you for additional purchases or send you a refund – whatever you prefer.

Do you ship oversees and to P.O. boxes?

Yes, we will ship your package anywhere that can accept deliveries.  However, once packages are shipped outside of the United States, we have very little control over tracking as the shipping now goes to a foreign entity.

Do you have customer service?

Of course! Our friendly and knowledgeable customer services reps are available to answer your questions during regular business hours which are Monday through Friday, 8 – 5.  If we are on another line helping others, please leave a message and we will return your call as soon as we possibly can.

How does Greenbug work?

Greenbug products use Cedarwood Oil as the active ingredient. Just like cedar chests and closets where you never see a bug.

Nature created cedar for pest control as any smell or pheromone-driven pest (the bad guys) cannot tolerate cedar.  These bad guy pests get food through the sense of smell… so the biters like mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, fire ants, etc. smell and then seek humans out and bite.  Greenbug products offer contact control (when sprayed directly) and then overall control when used repeatedly to keep pests away.  Pests cannot stand Greenbug!

For sight-driven creatures like humans, pets, birds, honey bees and butterflies – the active ingredient of cedar is harmless – merely a pleasant, natural aroma.  Keep all of the nature but control the pests!

Is Greenbug safer than what I am using now?

Traditional, synthetic chemical pesticides on the market today are predominantly comprised of neuro-toxins, poisons and carcinogens developed that are designed to kill pests... yet supposedly not problematic for humans, animals or the environment.  And we all know how DDT worked out, right? There are numerous studies, complaints, and medical documentation of health issues, injuries, and even death after exposure to these toxic chemicals available over the counter.

In contrast, Greenbug products are categorized as List 25(b) which is the EPA designation when all ingredients are from short lists that have been thoroughly tested and identified as ‘generally recognized as safe’.

Why is there no EPA registration on Greenbug products?

Greenbug has no EPA registration because Greenbug is comprised of ingredients determined by the EPA to be ‘generally recognized as safe’.  Therefore, Greenbug products are what are known as List 25(b) products.

The EPA has produced a list of active ingredients for pest control that are exempt from registration because they have been thoroughly tested and proven to cause no harm to humans, animals or the environment. There is a list of inactive ingredients as well.  A pest control product that uses active and inactive ingredients from these lists, prints the percentages of these ingredients on the label, and makes no false or misleading claims are classified as List 25(b).

The active ingredient in all Greenbug products is Cedar Oil.  The inactive ingredient in Greenbug for People/Pets is Hydrated Silica and the inactive ingredient in Greenbug Ready to Use and Greenbug Concentrate is Ethyl Lactate.

Is it all the same product or different formulations?

There are two different formulations for Greenbug, both made with an active ingredient of Cedar Oil.

Greenbug for People/Pets is a non-dilutable mixture of 10% Cedar Oil mixed with 90% Hydrated Silica, which was once described by a chemist as a liquid state of quartz rock.

Greenbug Concentrate is a water-soluble formulation comprised of 85% Cedar Oil and 15% Ethyl Lactate, a by-product of corn and a common ingredient in many foods we eat.

Greenbug Ready to Use is a water-diluted formulation of the Greenbug Concentrate and is 2.8% Cedar Oil and 0.3% Ethyl Lactate.

Are there any instances where I should not use Greenbug?

Using any product requires vigilance and observance of safe practices.

All Greenbug products should NOT be used around exotic birds as their lungs are sensitive.

Greenbug for People or Pets should not be used on plant material as it can disfigure leaves.

There are many who feel essential oils should never be used on cats.

Please use caution if you have been diagnosed with a cedar allergy.

If you develop any sensitivity to Greenbug products - either on your skin, in your eyes, in your lungs, discontinue use immediately - although we've never known that to happen!

How was Greenbug developed?

Owners Louise and Dan Hodges had been in the Landscape Industry for many years creating beautiful outdoor spaces for their clients to enjoy.  Upon relocating to the coast of South Carolina, the bugs became a real problem to be outside.  They were driven to find a pest control solution in line with their dedication to the environment.

After minimal research, it was obvious that traditional pest control products were not something they could support, so they set out to find something they could create and feel comfortable selling to others.  It had to work and it had to be safe!

The active ingredient of cedar was brilliant! Just like cedar chests and closets where you never see a bug! Yet to humans, animals and the environment, cedar is merely a wonderful, natural, pleasant aroma.  Bingo!  Greenbug was born!

After selling products for several years, Louise created the Greenbug System which allows the Greenbug Concentrate to be distributed throughout an entire property using your irrigation system.  There are now hundreds of happy customers with Greenbug Systems with pest-free properties throughout coastal South Carolina and Georgia.

How do I use Greenbug All Natural Pest Control Products?

Simply spray as needed where you do not want pests!  It is best to determine exactly what pest you are dealing with and apply according to the directions per pest.  For best results, click the 'Pests' link along the top bar of the website to see a list of pests and how to control them.

There are also instructions on each label for that particular product  Here are the different Greenbug Products with general instructions on how to use them.

Do Greenbug Products go bad over time?

Not to our knowledge...

Greenbug for People/Pets has been aged out in a laboratory to more than 8 years with no change in composition or effectiveness.

The Greenbug Concentrate and the Greenbug Ready to Use should be stored in a controlled environment (not too hot or too cold) to maximize the life expectancy.  If in a too cold environment, the Greenbug Concentrate can congeal a bit - but a warm bath of water on the outside of the container will fix that right away.  In a very warm environment, the diluted Greenbug Concentrate and Greenbug Ready to Use can begin to smell a little sour, although they are still effective. The Greenbug Ready to Use and diluted Greenbug Concentrate should be shaken periodically and have been effective stored in a controlled environment for at least three years.
