Green Living is Harmonious With Nature

Green Living is harmonious with Nature.  Honoring the ebbs and flows, the seasons, the nuances of leaving only footprints behind.  What happens when you fight Mother Nature? You lose.

Here is a story of what happens when you ignore Mother Nature and the needs of the Earth.  After World War II, the Japanese government decided to ‘manage’ the re-forestation of the countryside as their timber supply had been used in the war effort.  Rather than re-create what had been destroyed, all areas were planted with a single species known as Cryptomeria japonica which is a fast growing, higher producing lumber crop.

Cryptomeria japonica has needles for leaves, produces cones and is green all year.  It is a member of the cypress family.  Rather than waiting 30 years for a forest to be ready for harvest, this could be ready in 15.

But Nature likes variety.  A forest that evolves has a variety of plants and animals that support and balance each other.  The Japanese countryside had developed over eons and was balanced to support the network of insects, fungi, predators, songbirds, etc.  This is the basis for the balanced circle of life.  The forests before were  harmonious with Nature.

Well, it ends up that more than 30% of the Japanese population is wildly allergic to Cryptomeria.  Mass plantings are completely unnatural! And Cryptomeria creates a LOT of pollen.  The pollen clouds are thick and massive and last for weeks when Japan sits under a dense blanket of pollen weighing in the atmosphere.  Days are darkened and people warned not to venture outside. About 1 of every three people becomes ill.  Chronic respiratory illness for weeks on end.  And it is all because the government planted this unnatural mono-culture.

Here is the real kicker - ends up they are not a viable timber source.  The wood is too expensive to harvest because it is planted on steep hillsides.  The very same hillsides that once grew a variety of native species that were honored in Japanese culture.

What is the Green Living lesson here? Respect Nature and her wisdom.  The Japanese government didn’t and now their population suffers.  More than seventy years later, these hillsides could be as beautiful as they had been before.  Instead, they house a dark menace that makes the people sick.
