How to Control Mosquito Bites
Nobody likes mosquitoes. They cause so much irritation as they swarm around, annoyance as they leave behind mosquito bites, and then there is the pesky itching. They carry disease too! They leave behind those ugly, hideous welts that drive you nuts because they itch so badly. How can you control mosquito bites so that they aren’t in your life? Read on…
There are the long-standing comments from ‘experts’ that say the following:
· Avoid going outside at dawn and dusk
· Wear long sleeves
· Wear light clothing
· Avoid lotions and perfumes that can attract mosquitoes
· Use citronella candles
WRONG!
While those age-old suggestions aren’t really bad advice, they are just so ineffective and weak. Even if you followed those instructions to the letter, you may still be inundated with mosquito bites! They can be looking for you as their next victim any time of day. They can bite through clothes. It is the smell of your exhaling breath that attracts them, not smelly bath products. And a hungry mosquito will just laugh about citronella candles – the flame is a lot more intriguing than whatever ‘stink’ the citronella is supposedly giving off.
So, how do you REALLY control mosquito bites?
It all starts with preventing them from breeding. If mosquitoes can’t lay eggs, they are not going to bite anyone as they don’t need the blood meal. Mosquitoes require standing water to lay their eggs. They become underwater larvae and after three days emerge from the water hungry. Only females bite humans as they need protein in the blood for egg production. Again, if there is no place to lay the eggs, females eat like males do on pollen, fruits, and rotting plants. If there is no standing water for breeding, you have done 95% of how to control mosquito bites right there.
But - there may have been breeding opportunities in your neighbor’s yard so the next step is to control mosquitoes by repelling them. Do not use DEET. It is a scary, dangerous chemical that melts plastic so imagine what it will do to your skin over time. Citronella? Well, ha! Some have success with skin products (that are super greasy and trap the biting mosquitoes in the gooey-like slime on your skin). Some eat garlic (and turn off all friendships in the process). Many think that over the counter mosquito repellents are the ticket but they often have DEET, Picaridin or Permethrin as the active ingredient and that is super scary! These are all synthetic pesticides straight out of the DDT playbook and we all know how that turned out.
THE BEST WAY TO CONTROL MOSQUITO BITES is to have a Greenbug System in your yard. A Greenbug System integrates into your existing irrigation system so that everywhere water is directed becomes pest free. The active ingredient is cedar which is deadly to mosquitoes, which is how Greenbug controls mosquitoes. Not offensive like citronella but downright fatal to these smell-driven blood suckers.
If you have a Greenbug System, your life just got a lot easier. Now it doesn’t matter if you have standing water on the property - they won’t cross into your Greenbug controlled property to lay eggs. And of course, that is the same 95% of controlling mosquito bites success referred to earlier… no breeding, no bugs.
And you won’t need to repel them anymore because the Greenbug System does it for you. Automatically! Set-it-and-forget-it simple. Here is more information on a Greenbug System.
