Hurricane Erin = Lots of Mosquitoes!

Hurricanes bring enormous amounts of water.  Water is what mosquitoes need to lay eggs and multiply.  Therefore, hurricanes like Hurricane Erin breed LOTS OF MOSQUITOES!

Mosquitoes are annoying, buzzing pests that you swat away and become irritated when they are around.  They suck the blood of humans and animals and leave itchy, red welts behind that last for days.  But they aren't just your average pest.  Mosquitoes are deadly!

Mosquitoes have killed more humans in history than all those killed in wars combined.  That is a LOT of people dead due to mosquitoes.  Obviously we hate the 'bites' left behind, but when mosquitoes carry disease, well, that is completely different.

In the United States, the opportunity to get a mosquito-spread disease gets worse as the heat drags on (and the hurricanes come).  In the US, the biggest threat to health is the West Nile Virus.  Eastern Equine Encephalitis and other periphery diseases like Chikungunya and Zika Virus start making the news rounds as the summer progresses.  But there are many people who get West Nile Virus.  In 2024 in the United States, there were 2,445 human cases reported, including 165 deaths.

Why do the rates of disease go up as the season drags on?  Because more and more opportunities for successful breeding of mosquitoes keep happening.  Especially when the Hurricane Season cranks up and bring tons of rain!

As a Hurricane passes, the amount of rainfall is double, triple, or infinitely more than regular rainfall.  The ground gets saturated and cannot absorb the water so puddles form and linger.  Massive numbers of pools of water mean mosquitoes are breeding and will be hatching within 3 days.  They are looking to breed as fast as possible with these ripe conditions so they require human blood to produce the eggs.

Parts of the country are watching and waiting as Hurricane Erin runs her path.  The fear is the destruction but the after fear are the mosquitoes!
