SC Resident Dies From EEE, a Mosquito Transmitted Disease

For the first time in more than 20 years, a man living in South Carolina has died as a result of a mosquito.  The Beaufort County resident died due to complications from Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), which is a mosquito transmitted disease.

This disease must be spread by an infected mosquito that picked up EEE from another mammal and then injected it into the new victim.  Although it is a rare viral disease, it is often fatal when it progresses to neurological infection.  Approximately 30% of those who develop severe EEE symptoms will die and those who survive will likely face long-term neurological problems such as dizziness, nausea, convulsions, and behavioral changes.

There is no vaccine to prevent EEE and no specific medicine to treat it.  Symptom management and palliative care measures are the only options available once a victim is infected.

What can you do if you want to go outside?  The best course of action is to prevent mosquito bites!

Here are steps you can take:

Drain all standing water outdoors so they cannot breed.

Turn over trays at the bottom of container pots so there is nowhere for them to lay eggs.

Make sure gutters drain completely meaning no standing water.
